Shoreline damage on Lake Poinsett can come from both natural and human causes. Wind-driven waves can pound against the shoreline, gradually wearing away the soil and sediment. When the water level fluctuates, the shoreline is even more vulnerable to damage.
In the winter, ice becomes a major concern. If the lake levels rise while thick ice is still present, strong winds can slam the ice ashore with tremendous force. The ice can damage the shoreline and, in some cases, nearby structures.
Removing vegetation near the shoreline can increase the effect of shoreline damage. Vegetation plays a crucial role in stabilizing soil and reducing erosion.
Constructing docks, piers, and bulkheads can actually disrupt the way water flows and sediment is transported.
It is important to address shoreline erosion holistically, analyzing the impacts from both natural processes and human activities. Sustainable shoreline management will reduce erosion, protect water quality, and prevent property damage.
