Living on Lake Poinsett holds a special appeal for all of us. The scenic beauty, recreational opportunities, fish and wildlife, and peaceful atmosphere make Lake Poinsett a true South Dakota treasure! With proper lake levels, we can enjoy a wide variety of lake activities. When the lake levels are too high or too low, it can cause cascading impacts to the environment and our enjoyment of the lake. 

High water levels can damage the shoreline, docks, and homes. High levels also increase the threat of flooding, which can damage our wastewater system and make it unsafe to be near the water. On the other end of the spectrum, low water levels can restrict the use of boats and other watercraft, expose sediments, and cause fish kills. It is important to maintain a consistent water level to prevent water quality problems and impacts to habitat in and around the lake.

Effective management strategies, including flood mitigation measures and shoreline protection efforts, are essential for minimizing these impacts. The Lake Poinsett Management Plan will help bolster the resilience of lakeside ecosystems and communities, while also enhancing our enjoyment of the lake.
