FOCUS AREA | FISH & WILDLIFE HABITAT

Fishers, hunters, and wildlife enthusiasts alike know Lake Poinsett for its diverse array of fish and wildlife. Recreation for hunting and fishing supports tourism in the area, alongside local businesses and governments. 

Like so many other focus areas, balance is key. As Lake Poinsett grows in popularity as a premiere outdoors destination in South Dakota, the likelihood of overconsumption of animal populations also grows. Development projects also pose the potential to negatively impact the animal habitat in and around the Lake. With the Lake Poinsett Management Plan, we aim to use a science-based approach with the help of state agencies to manage, maintain, and improve (when possible) fish and wildlife habitats.
